Back in 2019 I wrote a short piece for the Oriente Saxophone Quartet, who are based in Chile. I’ve known two of the members, Alejandro and Karim, for many years, and they’ve played my music before. The piece is called ‘Hockney’s Shoes’, and it came into my mind after visiting an exhibition of portraits by […]

July!
July is going to be a busy month with performances in Finland, Oxford, Dartington, and I’m delighted that my music is included in a film that will be showing at the Lisson Gallery in London as part of the Christopher Le Brun exhibition. Follow the link to the Composers Edition newsletter that has all the […]

The Green Fairy
First stage rehearsals this week for the ‘Green Fairy’ project in Finland, for which I was commissioned to write some music along with the composer Johanna Pitkänen. This event is based around the poetry by Baudelaire. Thanks so much to Assi Karttunen, Mia Kivinen, and others!!

Absolute Inwardness
Thanks so much to Paul Sánchez for uploading another fantastic and gripping performance, this time from the premiere of ‘Absolute Inwardness’ (no live audience because of Covid). Sinuous lines intertwine with ghostly chorales, and everything gradually moves towards a state of absolute inwardness.

Premieres from the Chimeras
Thanks so much to Anita for giving the first performance of these two pieces!

Couperin scrolling score
Pianist, Paul Sánchez, is gradually releasing videos of his performances of the music from the CD Seria Ludo, with an added scrolling score that’s just in vision. The first one is The Couperin Sketchbooks, first premiered in London by Constance Chow. It’s a piece of Couperinesque music, with titles to match, which also includes fragments […]

Seria Ludo – another review!
A very pleasing review for ‘Seria Ludo’ has just come out in Piano Professional magazine. Here’s a tiny snippet, erm…(ahem),”…music of the highest integrity, rich in imagination and harmonic, melodic and rhythmic innovation…this recording is a very welcome addition to the catalogue of one of the most original voices in 21st century British music.” Huge […]

Art Preludes – Manet
Here’s a short video from the recent concert at the Royal Albert Hall which was run by EVC Music. Students from all over the world came over to play. A piece of mine was included – ‘Manet’, from the publication ‘Art Preludes’; five pieces taking their inspiration from impressionist painters and written in a classical/jazz/café […]

Irish Folk Melodies
This is from one of my parallel composing universes, somewhat different from my normal writing. And as these arrangements have only just been published, and it’s St Patrick’s day, I thought I’d share them. For flute and piano/harp.

Apollo Toccate
With all the woes in the world at the moment it’s good to be reminded of how many great people there are out there! Lucas Zampaglione is a young, and very talented guitarist from Argentina. He studied and performed my monster guitar piece Apollo Toccate for his final recital at college, before coming to Holland […]
