I’ve never quite had the allergic reaction to the words ‘folk song’ that some English composers have in the last few decades. Perhaps because of my Irish father, and my years living in the Scottish Highlands? And I own instruments like the Celtic harp (I prefer clarsach as a better name!) and concertina, even though I don’t play them at all these days. So folk song was probably going to find its way into my writing eventually.
Forton Music have recently published ‘Fictions and Folksongs’ Book 1, for flute, oboe, and clarinet. These are around conservatoire level pieces, or easier, and they combine fragments of folk songs with my own material in a similar style (the ‘fictions’). Book 2 , for clarinet and bassoon, is finished, and more on the way!
